Pittsburgh Montessori's Backpack Initiative provide a supply of nutritious meals and snacks for children over the weekend, free of charge. Bags are distributed on Friday each week during the school year, and any child enrolled in Pittsburgh Montessori is eligible to receive these weekly bags of food. This program operates on a first come, first served basis, beginning with 30 bags, with room for expansion if funding and donations allow.
If you believe your child could benefit from this program, we encourage you to sign them up by calling the school at 412-529-2010 or calling/texting Sara, a parent volunteer, at 204-994-7026. All students enrolled in the program will receive bags of food each week on Friday (or the last day before the weekend) beginning the first weekend in November. In addition to direct parental inquiry, the school social worker Ms. Lokay or a child’s teacher may also sign students up for the program with parental consent.
Please note that while we will do our best to accommodate allergies, we cannot guarantee allergy-free bags at this time. If you’d still like to sign up, please note the allergy and we will do our best to avoid packing those foods for your child.

The Backpack Initiative is run solely through the support of volunteers and donations. We have an ongoing box for donations in the front hallway of the school. If you’d like to shop for the program, we need healthy, single-serving options that require minimal effort to prepare. If you can donate on Fridays, when the bags are packed and distributed, we would especially appreciate any fresh fruits or vegetables that will hold up in a child’s backpack.
If you don’t like shopping, please feel free to write a check and we will do the shopping for you! Please indicate the donation is for the Backpack Initiative and make checks payable to Pittsburgh Montessori PTA.
